Fort St. John is small city of approximately 22,000 people, which services an estimated 56,000 from the surrounding area. Named the ‘Energetic City’, it provides the base for oil and gas activity, agriculture, transportation, forestry and tourism. Fort St. John is situated at Mile 47 of the Alaska Highway in the North Peace region of the province.
North Peace Secondary School (NPSS) serves a student population of over 1100 students from a wide socio-economic background. As the only senior High School, the facility houses all of the special programs including Senior Alternate, Assigned Time, Life Skills and Modified Essential Learning. NPSS is home to grade 10 to 12 students.
Due to high employment opportunities, surveys in 1999 and 2000 indicated 67 to 70% of our students had a job with 27% being employed for more than 20 hours per week. In Sept of 2020, 233 students were identified as having aboriginal ancestry. Since 5.4% of our district community’s population is of German origin, there is an interest in German as a second language.
NPSS officially opened in September of 1989 replacing the old building and relocating to a new location. In 2002 we opened an additional wing to help with the increasing enrolments. In 2011 we opened our new Campus at the Pomeroy Sports Center called the Energetic Learning Center. The ELC offers students the opportunity to learn in individualized, project-based ways.
NPSS is a beautiful, two-storey structure which, with its open and naturally lit upper floor hallways, resembles the modern mall-type of setting. NPSS is a modern facility in every respect offering a full automotive program, construction program, and welding and metal fabrication program.
We have a large population of students involved in Work Experience, Apprenticeship or Dual Credit Programs. Students have an opportunity to take classes in Lifeguarding, Hockey and Yoga. Annually, within the Arts Programs, our school presents a major musical that involves over 100 students and staff, showcasing our students’ many talents. With regards to technology, we have over 200 computers with up-to-date, industry standard software, and over 350 Chrome Books laptops that students can use during classes.
